When looking for a computer for Music Production they are 3 major components to keep in mind when shopping for a new computer.

  1. CPU Speed & Core Count.

  2. RAM

  3. Storage

CPU Speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz) it is recommended to get a computer with a CPU that has 2.5GHz or Higher. A “Dual Core” CPUs is not recommended, Quad Core CPUs are minimum requirements for making music in the modern day. Dual means 2, Quad means 4, Hexa means 6, Octo means 8, and after 8 usually they are simply numbered 10, 12, 16, 20, 32 etc. Once again the higher the better. The more Cores you have the more tracks your computer can process at once! The faster the CPU speed, the more plugins your computer can run on a single track and the faster items load and render.

RAM is used primarily by Sample Libraries and Google Chrome. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. All the Tracks of Audio are loaded into RAM, 50 tracks of Audio 5min long uses about 3GB of RAM. When using sample libraries the audio files within the libraries must be loaded into RAM as well, large sample libraries use a lot of RAM for Example, 1 instance of Superior Drummer uses up to 3GB of RAM and some libraries that emulate real instruments can use up to 7GB, so 32GB is a comfortable minimum to have unless you are a producer that uses over 20 tracks of Kontakt or other sample based libraries, if you use a lot of orchestral sample libraries we’d recommend 64GB.

Storage is the final aspect to ensure you have enough of. The most important thing is to ensure you’re buying a computer that uses ‘Flash Storage’ or Solid State Drives (SSD). A ‘traditional Hard Drive’ or (HDD) can be used for backups, but it’s a smart investment to ensure your storage is fast enough to keep up. All new Apple computers (from 2017 onward) use Solid State Storage so purchase as much as you can afford, if you’re a windows user, ensure you are purchasing a computer with upgradable storage or a computer that is utilizing SSD technology.
